Rock Climbing Courses

Fox_Mountain_Guides_Shortoff_Mountain_NCFox Mountain Guides and Climbing School is the Southeast's "Leader in Climber Education." We offer courses for everyone from gym climbers wanting to start climbing outdoors and people who have never climbed to the seasoned climbers with years of experience wanting to push their climbing to the next level. Our courses, while often copied, are unmatched in quality and content because our instructors are the best in the industry. We teach our programs here in the Southeast and have experience instructing across the USA and internationally.

The Climbing School headquarters has a custom-built classroom with WiFi, digital projector for slide shows, PowerPoint presentations ,and videos. We have a climbing library and indoor workshop to teach ground school components of classes inside in case of inclement weather. We find our programs copied on websites of our competitors frequently! No other company in the Southeast region can offer you this level of experienced instruction and custom facilities, and it’s the reason we are the number one school in the Southeast serving over 4,000 climbers last year!

"How can I learn to climb? I asked all around Charlotte and I got the same answer from Jessie Browns, Inner Peaks and Great Outdoor Prov. Co. All three said to contact Fox Mountain Guides because they were the best out there. So with 3 Fox brochures in hand I called to schedule the rock climbing 101 Course. I then took the Single Pitch Lead Course and then the ‘Master Class’ in December from Adam himself. It's been the best money I've spent for climbing yet!" - Jeff Jenkins

Climbing Instructor Training Courses

The American Mountain Guides Association is the only internationally-recognized provider of rock climbing instrutor and guide certification in the United States, and FMG is one of only climbing schools in the Southeast authorized to provide these training courses. While we train those looking for a career in guiding, we are now seeing many recreational climbers taking these programs to improve their skill set even though they do not wish to become instructors.

The AMGA courses start with the Climbing Wall Instructor Course and the AMGA Single Pitch Instructor Program. These programs prepare participants for the AMGA Rock Guide Course, which is for those who wish to go onto Rock Instructor or Rock Guide certificaton so they can guide multipitch rock routes.

For more details, see AMGA Climbing Instructor Training.

Skills Course Flowchart

The flowchart below represents our suggested path through our skills courses. The courses have been refined over the year with courses being added, changed and discontinued as we have found the perfect fit and flow for our training program. These courses can be taken in any order and you don't have to start with Rock Climbing 101, but if you are a novice climber or never climbed before you will get the most out of the training program and the most bang for your buck if you follow the suggested outline. These courses are scheduled throughout the year but if you don't see a date on the schedule call us and we can arrange to set up a new date. All the courses can be taught on any date 12 months of the year as 'Private Instruction' either for yourself, a group of friends or for your organization. It is also possible to create any training program you wish as Private instruction for as many days as you wish, in the past clients have booked us for 9 days straight of private instruction following all the skills classes below from our Rock Climbing 101 to Multipitch Lead.
