Internships Print E-mail

For the summer 2010 season Fox Mountain Guides will be offering two internship positions. Both interns will have the chance to work in all aspects of the business from administration, marketing and public relations to equipment management, logistics and program development. All interns will work in the field (always under the direct supervision of an AMGA certified instructor) and have chance to work with individual clients and groups in single pitch settings. Interns will have the opportunity to 'shadow' any guided day or course being offered by Fox Mountain Guides, and of course spend the summer climbing with all the guides on days off. Interns live with the majority of our guides at our Guide House in Brevard. Becoming a fulltime Instructor for Fox Mountain Guides is a highly sought after position and mostly we have hired instructors that have completed a summer internship with us for a full time position. This is a great way to 'get into the business'.

What are we looking for?

We are looking for Wilderness/Outdoor Education degree majors in their last year of College that need to take part in a summer internship as part of their studies. We are looking for CLIMBERS, please do not apply if you just once climbed, climbed in a gym or did a Rock Climbing 101, 201 class only. We want CLIMBERS. You have gear, you go climbing in your spare time, you have climbed at different locations in the USA, you want to become a guide and hopefully you have already worked or at least volunteered in some capacity teaching climbing. We would love to see candidates that hold an AMGA training or certification such as the AMGA Single Pitch Instructor certification. We would like to see candidates that hold Wilderness First Aid or even better Wilderness First Responder certification. Candidates that hold these certifications, have experience teaching climbing will go straight to the top of the pile of applications (last year we had roughly 80 applicants for two internships).

What will I do?

Interns will work in all aspects of the business which includes the Climbing School (Fox Mountain Guides and Climbing School) but also our store (Guides Gear Outfitters). You will be working an average of 5 days per week completing a myriad of tasks.

Here is a small list of possible tasks;

  • Assisting guides in the field on a technical course or small or large groups (Scouts, Church groups, etc)
  • Assisting at Chimney Rock Park doing walk up 'tasters', two hour lessons or half/full days.
  • Working on our six day summer camps www.rockclimbingsummercamps.com
  • Manning the store Guides Gear Outfitters and working in all aspects of that business; sales, restocking, customer relations, ordering gear, etc.
  • Working with our Office Manager in the office working on all aspects of the 'behind the scenes' of the guide service.
  • Bookings, scheduling, customer relations, emailing clients, promotional and marketing work, distributing flyers, equipment maintenance and cleaning, etc.
  • Helping on projects to promote FMG and GGO, assisting in the preparation for 'Adopt A Crag Day', manning a booth at promotional events, etc
  • Helping out around the Guide House, cleaning, yard work, etc.

These are some of the possible tasks interns will be doing. Interns should be flexible and willing to get stuck in and help out with all aspects of the business!

Dates:

This year the summer internship is 14 weeks long and starts May 15th through to August 22nd 2010. You will be expected to work an average of five days per week in between these dates. Recomendations

"How can I learn to climb? I asked all around Charlotte and I got the same answer from Jessie Browns, Inner Peaks and Great Outdoor Prov. Co. All three said to contact Fox Mountain Guides because they were the best out there. So with 3 Fox brochures in hand I called to schedule the Rock Climbing 101 Course. I then took the Single Pitch Lead Course and then the ‘Master Class’ in December from Adam himself. It's been the best money I've spent for climbing yet!"
